Laos

After another day in Chiang Mai doing a Thai cooking course, we took the bus to the Lao border. On the way there, we stopped at a White Temple which was a fascinating site.

We stayed the night in a thai border town called Chiang Khong, and the next morning we took a boat across the Mekong to the Lao border. There was a lot of confusion with people everywhere, but we managed to get ours visas. We then had to wait for ages for the slow boat. The journey from the border to Luang Prabang takes two days, with an overnight stop in Pak Beng. It was a beautiful cruise down the Mekong. We were surrounded by mountains, cliffs and villagers smiling and waving.

After a lengthy 6 hour uncomfortable trip, we arrived at Pak Beng. Camille wasn't feeling well and started getting a high temperature. We avoided the touts who swarmed the boat and found ourselves a cosy room in the village. We went out for some indian food, which took a life time. The service in Laos is an experience itself ! We got an early night, to be ready for the second day on the slow boat. After another full day cruising down the mystic Mekong, we arrived in Luang Prabang.

 

Après une dernière journée à Chiang Mai passée à suivre un cours de cuisine Thai, nous avons pris un bus jusqu'à la frontière laotienne. En chemin, nous nous sommes arretés pour visiter un temple tout blanc, assez original.

Nous avons passé la nuit dans une petite ville frontalière appellée Chiang Khong, avant de traverser le Mekong jusqu'à l'autre rive le lendemain matin. Il y avait beaucoup de confusion et des gens partout, mais nous avons tout de même réussi à obtenir nos visas. Ensuite, nous avons dû attendre plusieurs heures pour le "slow boat". Le voyage en bateau jusqu'à Luang Prabang dure deux jours, avec une nuit d'arrêt à Pak Beng. C'était une très jolie balade sur le Mekong, au milieu des montagnes et des villageois nous faisant signe depuis la rive.

Après 6 heures de voyage plutôt inconfortable, nous sommes arrivés à Pak Beng. Je ne me sentais pas au plus haut de ma forme et je commencais à avoir un peu de fièvre. Nous avons évité les escrocs à la sortie du bateau et nous nous sommes trouvés une petite chambre confortable dans le village. Nous sommes sortis diner dans un restaurant indien et les plats ont mis plus d'une heure et demi à arriver. Le service au Laos est une expérience à part entière ! Nous nous sommes couchés tôt pour être en forme pour notre deuxième jour de "slow boat". Et finalement, après une journée entière à naviguer sur le mystique Mekong, nous sommes enfin arrivés à Luang Prabang.
